February 10 & 11, 2013 (Sunday, Monday)

Lobby Day 2013 is coming up quickly. This year, hundreds of health professional students from around the state will convene in Sacramento on February 10 & 11 to receive training on health reform and how to be effective advocates for healthcare justice and security. After a full-day student leadership Training Day on February 10, students will begin the morning of February 11 by taking to the streets of Sacramento with a march and rally outside of the capitol. We will then meet with our elected officials in support of Senate Bill 810, the California Universal Health Care Act.

Single Payer, with Salsa on the Side

by Danny Lemos, PNHP-CA Development Consultant

There was dancing in the aisles at Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood, which played host last month to the 2nd annual PNHP California Gala & Awards Ceremony, “Single Payer With Salsa On The Side.” The event netted over $30,000 to benefit our education and outreach programs.

Catalina herself served up a sumptuous brunch. Meanwhile, the entertainment by Grammy award nominated “Mongorama” — a nine piece Latin jazz ensemble helmed by maestro Jose Rizo – brought attendees out of their seats and into the aisles.

Dr. Steve Tarzynski’s introduction of Senator Sheila Kuehl clearly demonstrated why she was honored with a Lifetime Achievement award. Los Angeles chapter member Dr. Bob Vinetz received the “Southern California Activist of the Year” award; East Bay chapter member Gerri Field garnered the same award for Northern California. Both are highly deserving. Equally so for Dr. Christopher Brown, who was declared the Student Leader of the Year by his CaHPSA colleagues as 2012 Southern California CaHPSA President.

On behalf of Assembly Member Holly Mitchell (47th district), District Director Sydney Kamlager presented PNHP California with an official certificate recognizing our advocacy efforts in promoting single payer in California and the nation.

Special thank you to the students who attended.

CaHPSA and the Latino Medical Student Association Annual Conference

by Kelly Vitzthum and Pablo Lopez

The Annual Latino Medical Student Association and Student National Medical Association health conference at UC Irvine was a great opportunity for CaHPSA outreach and education, particularly to those who are interested in serving populations of color. Reaching out to future health professionals is key to the success of the single payer movement, as they are some of the strongest voices in advocating for better patient care and a more just healthcare system. CaHPSA Southern California President Kelly Vitzthum and Southern California Education and Outreach Officer Pablo Lopez, presented on single payer with an emphasis on health disparities, particularly among people of color. The audience was wonderfully attentive and there was a great discussion about access to quality healthcare in underserved populations, health as a human right, and the future of single payer in California after the presentation. It's a privilege to be able to reach out to passionate, budding professionals, and CaHPSA will hopefully see a few familiar faces from this conference at Lobby Day 2013.

PNHP’s 25th Annual Conference Was The Largest Yet

a note from the PNHP-CA newsletter

PNHP’s 25th Annual National Conference on Friday and Saturday, October 26th and 27th in San Francisco, had the largest attendance of any PNHP conference with about 400 attendees, including over 80 health professional students.

The conference started with a Leadership Training on Friday, in which attendees saw a sample Grand Rounds from PNHP founders, David Himmelstein and Steffie Woolhandler. Attendees also got to go to multiple workshops, including one on international health systems led by PNHP CA Vice President Claudia Chaufan. The evening was capped off with a special “debate style Q and A” after dinner to get the audience to interact with each other.

Saturday brought new energy with the influx of most conference attendees. Speakers included an International array of experts including a Alex Benos, a doctor from Greece, and Beat Ringger, a member of the Swiss Public Employees Union, as well as Nationally recognized health economists like Gerald Friedman of UMass and Kevin Grumbach of UCSF. PNHP CA Board Member Paul Song also spoke about California’s plans to implement single payer in California utilizing a tested social justice movement approach and waivers written into the Affordable Care Act.

Saturday evening held a California reception and a Students reception to allow for National planning. During the California reception, staff members Molly Tavella, Bill Skeen and Cindy De La Cruz brought California members “up to speed” on current California programs and projects. Chapter representatives from each of our five active chapters: Humboldt/Del Norte, Chico, Sonoma, East Bay and Los Angeles also spoke about their chapters and activities. Jeff Gee from San Francisco also spoke about his efforts to start a new chapter in San Francisco before 2013.

Needless to say, the conference left California members with feelings of enthusiasm for the new year and new California Universal Health Care Act Bill cycle.
