What is Project White Coat?
Project White Coat (PWC) trains students as Certified Enrollment Counselors (CEC) and mobilizes them throughout California to help people enroll in Medi-Cal and/or Covered California health plans. All counselors are student volunteers who undergo extensive training through Covered California and provide free, informed, and objective assistance.
Our PWC CECs are medical, graduate, undergraduate, and community college students who want to serve their communities. By helping individuals and families navigate their health plan options, we are helping people get the health coverage they need now. Till this day, our students have helped over 500 families enroll in Medi-Cal or a health plan!
CaHPSA’s Project White Coat CECs practice cultural humility, express compassion, and approach difficult cases with empathy. Many of our counselors are bilingual and committed to being of service in lower resource communities. As aspiring medical and health professionals, PWC CECs get first-hand experience working with diverse populations, gaining insight into how social determinants of health affect a person’s health status and access to care.
